[Solved] No Eth0... anywhere!!!

Post by jerm1027 »

So... the basics. I'm running Linux Mint 11 Katya w/ Gnome. Had a dual-boot configuration with Windows 7 Ultimate x64... read on.

Hardware:
MSI P67A-G45 motherboard
LAN

• Supports one PCI Express LAN 10/100/1000 Fast Ethernet by Realtek 8111E.
So, my internet was working fine, up until I attempted to slim the size of my Winsxs file. After my reboot, some key system files were corrupted. So I reinstall Windows, and here is where things get funny. My ethernet doesn't work on either Windows or Mint. Mint doesn't even seem to know I have an ethernet port, and Windows can't connect. So as of right now, I'm using my phone to tether my computer to the interwebs. Oh and Windows crapped out again... I did attempt to use a USB Wireless N adapter, but it doesn't seem to want to connect to my wireless network (connection times out and prompts for the security key). Another problem, for another time. So if I want internets, I have to use my phone either as a Wifi Adapter (works perfectly) or through tethering. I know it's not the cable or the network, as they both worked fine on my laptop, which is also running Linux Mint 11 x64.

here is my ifconfig

Code: Select all

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0

          RX bytes:141696 (141.6 KB) TX bytes:141696 (141.6 KB)

usb0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 56:52:4f:2d:71:77
          inet addr:172.20.23.253 Bcast:172.20.23.255 Mask:255.255.255.252
          inet6 addr: fe80::5452:4fff:fe2d:7177/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:3624 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:3741 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:3224447 (3.2 MB) TX bytes:701029 (701.0 KB)
I'm at a lost now. I really don't want to re-install any operating at this point, since I have an SSD as my primary drive. Any idea where I should begin?

Sounds like you need to ascertain whether your hardware actually works first. What happens if you boot from a linux live CD, does the ethernet port work then?
[Edit] your original post and add [SOLVED] once your question is resolved.

ok, I just realized I kinda abandoned this thread. So, I still have the issue, with the same motherboard. Turns out I couldn't connect with a live boot, or Windows. I'm pretty sure my integrated NIC just crapped out. I've been using a PCI one I found in a box of spare parts, and no longer issue. So, yes, it was a hardware issue.
