Strange Ubuntu Wired Internet problem

Postby Jimmmac1 on Thu Feb 23, 2012 9:40 am

Hi all

I know this is the Linux Mint forum, but I thought someone might have some ideas. I am pretty much out and no-one from the Ubuntu forums has answered. I just downloaded my Linux Mint 12 and am planning to change distro's probably today/tomorrow. This is a very strange problem. All of a sudden in the last few days I have been having a problem with my Internet connectivity. I get a lot of 'Looking up' and 'Waiting for ...' when trying to access websites. I have the problem with both Firefox, Chrome and Thunderbird. I have a dual boot machine and when I tried my Windows 7 yesterday, everything was very quick. So this looks only like a Linux problem. I tried changing the settings to OpenDNS and there is no difference. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Those looks alright. Have you tried pinging common sites and seen the result?

HI Oscar

Yes, and everything looks fine. Here is a tracert from Windows 7 to show you the path to Yahoo. Looks pretty much the same in Linux.

I am creating my MInt CD now. Just a little off topic, is there any reason you can think of that I can't do a 64bit Mint on my computer? It is about 5 years old, but has 4 gb of memory. Thanks for all the help.

What is your CPU model/type? 64 bit is based on CPU not RAM? If you have Core 2 Duo or newer you can have 64 bit?

I am running 64 bit with Core2Duo and 3 GB RAM.

Hi Oscar

That could be a problem. I have a AMD Sempron Processor, 3400+, 2ghz. Might not be strong enough. Thanks.

It's not strength but no of CPU cores?

You will be fine with 32-bit as well. Don't forget to try LiveCD first before install. Check your net connection in LiveCD see how it works.

Hi Oscar?

Well that settles it. Mint Live is lightning fast. Something wrong with Ubuntu talking to the dns servers. Here is the Mint live traceroute to yahoo.

I don't see much of a difference. Interesting. I had to install traceroute. Any good places you would recommend to see how to change from Ubuntu 11.10 to Linux Mint 12 on a dual boot Windows 7/Linux computer? Thanks again for all the help.
