KDE v.s. Gnome Desktop and Network Shares

Postby HilltopsGM on Sun Mar 25, 2012 12:18 am

Howdy folks,

I am on the road so I might not have all the info that is going to be requested, but I thought that I'd post it anyway just in case it was something simple that I was missing.

I was playing with the full dvd version of Mint 12 and wanted to see what KDE v.s. Gnome was like (I am still trying to wrap my brain around the difference between 'Desktops' and 'windows managers').

Anyhow, I am also setting up a FreeNas8 storage solution that my windows computers can (and have) connected to.
You can set up a "Specific" Share for Linux Machines, I just have not done this yet.

Here is the question:
When I ran the Gnome version, it saw "Samba Shares on Freenas" and was able to connect to it without a hitch! I thought that was interesting.
I lit up the KDE version, and it would NOT connect. (When I get home, I'll post the exact message)

Am I missing something here?

Is Linux Mint 12 basically not the same underlying system?

Here is what I see in Gnome;

Here is what I see in the KDE version:

Which takes me to here:

And then goes to here:

(see next post - because the forum won't let me post more than 3 at a time)

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Here is the last screen I get to before I get stopped:

KDE_Desktop_3.jpg

The KDE Desktop can see it, but It won't let me connect. (sorry, I'll have to post later exactly what the screen says)

For now is there a reason why these 2 versions of Mint would be acting differently in this situation?

Thanks for the help.

Please note that I haven't used KDE since Version3 so I would be hard pressed to explain what's going on with that but I might be able to explain this:
Is Linux Mint 12 basically not the same underlying system?

Both systems will use the same underlying samba client protocol but each system has a different layer on top of that to browse networks through it's File Manager.

When you connect to a specific share using Nautilus it will essentially run the following command internally:
Code: Select all
gvfs-mount smb://server/share

The "gvfs" part of that command stands for Gnome Virtual File System and KDE has no gvfs.

As I recall, KDE has or at least had in V3 something similar called kio-slaves that did the same sort of thing but the mechanics of how it did all that I simply do not remember
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.
