Installing Helena RC 1

Postby sceee1991 on Thu Nov 26, 2009 7:20 pm

From what I can tell, it appears that those who have installed Helena RC 1 are now able to update to the stable version. Also, from what I can tell, it appears the only thing holding up the stable release is translations. If both of those assumptions are right, is there a reason it wouldn't be advisable to install RC 1 and update? I have a few days off and I would love to get this done while I have some time to work with it; however, I don't want to go this route if there is a reason it is not advisable.

I couldn't agree more... 8 looks and functions beautifully... So much hard work for us to enjoy... :)

BTW, I upgraded from Mint 7 using the GUI instructions.

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 right now, but I am ready to go to Mint. I am about ready to install the RC and do the upgrade.

I was running Karmic. Created about 60 gigs of unallocated space, popped in the Helena live cd and installed. For the time being I'm triple booting Mint 8, Karmic and Win 7. I guess I've upgraded successfully to 8. I've had no updates for the past 3 days with the exception of one yesterday called "transitions".

I'm really loving Helena!

Well, I did it, and I have no regrets yet. So far, all is well.

I have installed Mint 8 RC1 some days ago on a spare drive and getting the updates. The only issue I have is Firefox 3.5 can take up to 24 seconds when I click on a URL link before the new page opens. I go back to the Mint 7 drive and Firefox works just fine.
I submitted a bug report but I suspect it is my install as no on else has the issue.
I will probably have to do a new install of Mint 8 RC1. Right now I do not trust Mint 8 if I want to update the Mint 7 drive.

I haven't installed Helena RC1 just yet (on dialup,..waiting for a CD in "snail-mail" in a few days). But concerning the Firefox 3.5 issue: There seems to be some complaints about it in other distros as well (the taking forever to load a page, etc. etc.). For instance,...I have the exact same problems with it in Parsix (Debian-Testing-based) 3.0 on my P4. But I installed it also on my older PIII,...and have no issues whatsoever with Firefox opening quickly. (????) :?

Ok, thanks on the reply. I have another extra hard drive I will try the install in and see if the same issue occurs. Since you say others have this issue, I do not believe the ISO burn is suspect. I always check the md5sum before burning.

I did some web searching and I see this delay issue quite a lot. Some are going back to the previous Firefox so I will avoid using Mint 8 until I see that Firefox has solved this issue. Not sure I want to try to remove Firefox 3.5 in Mint 8 and try to install Firefox 3.0 that I use right now. There must be only a few here with this issue.
