Linux Mint E17

Post by keljaden »

I am curious as why Linux Mint doesn't have an E17 release. E17 is extremely light and hands down one of the most beautiful DE's I have ever used. The only downside is that I have yet to find a distro that had anywhere near the quality of Mint and still used it as it's main desktop environment.

Is there any hope for an E17 release of Linux mint, personally I thought it would be even better than LXDE. And with Ecomorph, compiz works well it in.

What does the community and devs think about an E17 release. I know I would use it.

I would kill for a Linux Mint E17 Edition!!! 8)
I love Enlightenment, but I have yet to find a really good distro dedicated to it. Elive is good but I don't like its policy; openGEU was good but development seems to have stopped (?); ozOS isn't very good. Just pasting E17 over (minimal) Ubuntu didn't work for me.
I think that E17 is THE desktop environment for netbooks! Quick, beautiful, extremely configurable, light... What else could you want?

I would be interested in an E17 edition too.

MoonOS is a very "Minty" and beautifully done E17 distro. Have a look! The current version is built on Ubuntu 9.04.

MoonOS sadly doesn't have ecomorph, something I feel that the Linux Mint devs would gladly implement. Personally I find E17 on par with KDE and I feel it looks even better than gnome.

I sadly do not know the "know how" to make it, or I would. How should we go about making Mint E17 a possibility?

There is a PCLinuxOS remaster with ecomorph included.

PClinuxOS is only 32 bit =(...That and I seem to loose about 2 hours of battery life using that over Linux Mint. That is why it took my so long to switch to linux, I couldn't find a distro that would give my laptop its full 4+ hours of battery life.

I looked at the normal E17 of PClinuxOS 2010 and when I just tried to use the compiz it came with, it crashed...a lot. I don't think it was normal ecomorph.

Is there a specific link to a PClinuxOS E17 with working ecomporh. Elive is awesome...but I don't have the funds to pay $15 on a distro that doesn't look have any decent support. Their are complaints all over the forums about the devs just falling off the face of the earth.

Yes, support is non-existent, as is the community. That's a no-no for me. I'm too used to the wonderful Mint community 8)

Yeah, that's why I so desperately want a mint one. E17 has the potential to be the best DE ever. I think if a distro like Mint did it, it would be... Any suggestions how how we can get one started?

I would love to see an E17 flavor of Mint too! Just for grins, I tried to install it on an old spare Dell system I have (XPS 720 Core 2 Duo). I used the "easy e17" script I found on the Ubuntu forums. If that script is "easy", then I would really hate to see "hard"! :? I had to install all kinds of stuff to keep the script happy, but I finally gave up after I got stuck.

Here's the output from my efforts to get E17 installed on Mint 9 64-bit, and you can see where I got stuck and gave up, unless someone here can steer me in the right direction! :D

Do you think I should PM Clem about this, or is there another dev who handles ideas such as this?

Perhaps we should get a poll on one of the main pages deciding how many people would like to use the E17 and pray that there are enough of us (and a willing dev) to create such an edition.

Greeting to everyone ! This is my first time here and hope not the last. I have been checking your forum pretty often recently as I am awaiting the xfce edition to be great and motivates me to change from mandriva.

Mandriva's 2010 gnome version is very good but I still have some browser (firefox, chromium) bugs since Mdva 2009 and it seems its getting heavier on my 512MB ram - it is prone to freezing when firefox, evolution and office run together.

I believe mint's xfce could cope. However, why I actually, just, registered is because as I am waiting for xfce to be released I am researching light and nice looking desktops and could not mis your contemplation about e17. Not very keen on lxde but like e17, but no quality distro has it on offer. Its not, as I could see, very good on Mandriva either.

E17 suppose to be light some argue 60mb is enough, well that would be fantastic even for our older dell c400 with 256mb (shared with graphics). MoonOS looks very nice but they claim minimum 256mb to run and it is not up to scratch yet (some font issues I experienced previously).

Welllll, if you are thinking e17 I will vote for it, too :D
Is there chance to get good e17 on mint xfce lts?

roschell, welcome to the mint community.

I have mint 8 xfce install on my old dell dimension desktop (P4 2.0ghz 768mb ram ati radeon 9700 pro)

I am running the script from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=916690 its compiling right now. It's been almost 30 minutes and idk how much longer it will take to install E17 svn. Will report how it goes.

Also I did some research. Once upon a time, there was a Mint E17;
http://linuxminte17.wordpress.com/

for some reason it was discontinued. not sure what else we can do to get Mint17 back, but I think it would be worth it. Personally I think it would be worth scrapping the Flux, LXDE, or XFCE for E17 if we had to choose.

EDIT:
Well, I got E17 to run, I can't figure out how to get my wifi working on it though. This does prove that E17 has the potential to work great with Mint if someone with a little bit more knowhow were to work on this.

It would really nice if someone (a programmer) could take on the development of e17. To be honest, I am a user, not a programmer, however I do time to time some translations of linux applications. Personally, I think because of the appearance and low hardware requirements it is e17 which would have good chance to hit the world and push windows aside.

However, more programmers would have to get involved to make it really good contender. I have been with linux for 5yrs now and still have to have winXP installed cos I am a user and some setups are quite a 'nut' to get working (for example my nokia phone and pda mio work flawlessly with cable on xp, but not at all for me on linux, sorry to say) - maybe mint will surprise me ones tested with xfce 8)

The idea to drop perhaps flux, lxde and xfce for e17 or just the first two would seem practical and beneficial for the user.

I would rather we not have to drop any of them though as their are people who use all of them...Personally I think we could do without the LXDE version as their is peppermint for those who want a mint-like LXDE.

Also, it is not "programmers" per say that build the distros. They are normally referred to as "devs" or "developers". You don't necessarily have to be a programmer to make your own distro.

Anyone have any ideas of whom I should speak to about making an E17 release? or, is there a way I can start learning more about what goes into making a "mint" distro so I could work on the release myself.

Well bad news, sorta...

I pm'ed Kendell about it. He pretty much gave a great explanation of why it would be extremely difficult to do and E17 isn't maintained very well. It's been in development for quite some time now. Fluxbox is still lighter than E17, and about as resource heavy as LXDE. LXDE has a lot more people working on it and seems to be more stable. That's pretty much why we won't have one. The devs would be pretty much in charge of the entire DE. It would be asking a lot for the current mint team. The only way it would be possible is if we added a lot of very motivated and skill devs to the team who wanted to maintain it.

Can't wait for the LM9 FB release.

From what I remember, e17 had a very ad-hoc development... but it's been a while since I've looked
But it is a nice looking interface

Also, wow 8GB recommended requirement for moonOS?
The update messages had really had to understand english, lol
Gonna try this if I find the time to

Hmm, looking for e17 screenshots via google lead me to an attack site claiming my computer was infected. Of course, I downloaded the helpful 'fixit' file that the site offered, ran it through wine and all my problems went away! Except I'm now paying £1000 a month to something called BANK OF UGANDA. Any ideas why?

For the more literal minded among you, yes I did come upon an attack site, and no I didn't download the file. Even on linux you can't be too careful. :P

I too would love an e17 based mint distro. I actually bought a netbook with the express purpose of installing Elive on it. the OS worked beautifully in my old Dell, but on the new netbook, it just wouldn't load. no matter what I did, it would not recognize the screen and wouldn't finish booting. The community is also a ghost town and getting a hold of the developer or anyone in the community is a case study in patience. I spent a week trying to get it to load and even a developer firend who is a Suse nut and has been into linux for over a decade, I couldn't get the damn thing to work. At the end I said screw this and decided to go with mint and cairodock.

On the plus side, Mint was a flawless install, with the only thing I hadto do manually was download the wireless driver. In addition I was able to download Qimo4Kids as a separate session (as opposed to a dual boot OS), so no my daughter can use the netbook as her first computer in quimo mode, while daddy runs it from mint as the Admin.

BTW, IIRC OpenGeu, which is also E17 based, uses Xubuntu as its based. As I understand it they didn't sit around and wait for Enlightenment to sort out their problems and replaced the unstable parts with the stable equivalents from ubuntu. It's supposed to be pretty full featured but I found the interface to be somewhat restrictive. this was especially true of the taskbar they saddle you with. If Mint was able to do an e17 distro following the example of OpeGEU (replacing unstable parts of E17 with stable ones from Ubuntu) and mimicking the basic layout of elive you would easily have the best e17 distro anywhere on the market and as opposed to Elive, it would have the benefit of mint and ubuntu's community, repositories and unique solutions. That plus you wouldn't have to deal with an absentee staff or have to pay to use the distro.

This sounds to me like a project well worth the effort. if it helps envision what is possible, here is a video of Elive in action. Imagine this with all of mints awesomeness underlying it:
