Re: Which Mint for 256MB RAM and Pentium III?
actually i used trial and error + common sense. bum shows you what is running, starting and you can use it to tweak as per your needs, also on another note i added noatime to the fstab entries to cut down on disk writes
Re: Which Mint for 256MB RAM and Pentium III?
I have just installed BUM and realised it is the equivalent of "msconfing" with Windows, exactly what I was looking for
Thanks for the Hint !
I will make further researchs about noatime. I have no clues where to write this entry in etc/fstab.

Try this for etc/fstab: http://tldp.org/LDP/solrhe/Securing-Opt ... sec73.html
For a lighter and faster system you could also start with a Debian minimal install:
http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/
Then install only what you need, for LXDE just run:
# apt-get install lxde-core
and go from there.

I don't know about a single tutorial but there is some information on the web:

The new Mint 11 with the new kernel and Firefox 4 it's faster than Mint 10 with Firefox 3.6 on my netbook. The proper choice of apps also helps:
