ADSL modem

Postby pariolly on Thu Feb 10, 2011 6:20 am

How can I set up a Telstra ADSL home modem to allow other ADSL modems on the same phone line to work? I am NOT using a LAN setup. I simply want to connect 2 ADSL modems on 2 computers in different rooms to be able to access the ADSL single line in my house. As soon as another modem is connected, the whole system slows down to molasses; as soon as we disconnect one of the modems, broadband works fine.

You do not want two DSL modems fighting each other on one line. You have already seen the result.

There are several ways to get all the computers in your house online using one DSL modem.

One way is to get a small switch such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124005. The DSL modem output plugs into the switch. You would then run Ethernet cables from the switch to each computer.

Another way is to get a wireless router such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190&cm_re=linksys_wireless_router-_-33-124-190-_-Product. The DSL modem plugs into a port on the back. You then can use wireless cards such as the Linux-friendly http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166020&cm_sp=DailyDeal-_-33-166-020-_-Product in any desktops around the house.

These are just the first two suggestions that came to mind. I am sure others have some ideas, as well.

Ummmmm....having worked on ADSL for quite a few years as a technician, how did you even acquire 2 modems against the same account? ADSL is a point to point digital subscriber loop that just rides on the same line as your dialtone, but on a different frequency. That's why you have filters for the phones in the house, keeping the DSL noise filtered so you don't hear it because it's in the audible range.

Anyway, the system is designed for ONE modem on the user end. That single modem syncs up to either a remote terminal somewhere near your neighborhood, where it is then combined onto a carrier fiber back to the central office, or it is carried directly back to the central office over the phone line to the central office equipment that it syncs with. Either way the "sync" process is only for the originating device and the end user device, but not more than one device at the user end. If you had two telephone lines, each with ADSL, then you could have two modems in the same location, but having two on one line would create noise and disrupt the sync communication between the devices and render the circuit useless.

Does the sync light on the previously working ADSL modem start to flash or go out when the other is connected? If it does, that is a clear indication you are inducing noise into the circuit.

Do you ever get a sync on the second modem on the line while maintaining sync on the first?

Okay, as above, you *can't* run both ADSL modems @ the same time. :!:
your username & pwd should be in only one modem, & it should have it's sync light solid/ON @ all times. :)

Call BigPond, if there is no sync light & report that, as a fault.
( they will send a tech out, to fix any faults)

connect *only one* PC via a ethernet cable (usually the yellow one that came with that modem),
& check that you can connect to the 'net - if not call BigPond, as above.

if you can. - then you will have to use a 4port/wireless router, to give the 'net axcess to the 2nd PC,
either via a long! ethernet cable or via wireless. - you can get both of these, from harveynorman, if you don't have one. :(

You cannot connect 2 modems to the same phone line. One dial-up and one ADSL is no problem, but 2 of one of these types on the same phone line will not work, normal phone lines support only 1 connection. Even 2 modems connecting to the same server address does not work.

You need a 'network switch' to be able to connect more computers. Of course, you can also use a router instead of a modem, but a network switch may be a cheaper option and you don't have to go through the hassle of getting the right settings for your router.
