Mint names.

Postby Elmacus on Sun Jul 10, 2011 4:38 pm

It's getting worse with all names.
LMDE
LMDE xfce
LMDE kde
Linux mint debian lxde
Mde gnome.
Kdemint
Gnomemint.
I have heard all variants and more.

I think clem needs to establish a namestandard so new people don't get confused.

Like:
Mint gnome
Mint kde
Mint xfce
Ie drop Linux from name and use de as second word.
For debian edition.

For ubuntu version, just put the version between, like:
Mint 11 gnome.
What to you think?

I'm okay with the current naming as all the tabs on the Linux Mint Download page are very clear as to what is what, I think. It's just for newbies that perhaps some more explaining could be done as to all the choices (and advice based on their experience with Linux).

It may get a little crowded and confusing on #linuxmint-help with the increase in desktop environment choices.

I don't know about naming standards, but there's too many versions around.

My opinion is for two versions:

Mint - Containing all the various desktops in a live DVD (choose a DE as a session before login). Based on Debian Stable with security updates and backported packages.

Fresh Mint - All the desktops in a live DVD but based on Debian Testing, so a rolling release.

Ditch the Ubuntu versions, or if you must have an Ubuntu version:

Mint Chew ('cos it chews through resources compared to the Debian version :D) - All the desktops in a live DVD.

Or this scheme:

Mint Orange (ubuntu)
Mint Lime (debian gnome)
Mint Citrus (xfce)
Mint Cactus (kde)
Mint Melon (fluxbox)
etc..
*edit added, (there will be NO Mint Apple :-)

No version numbers, well add some if you must.

Get it ?
I want copyleft on this :-)
