You can still install the Mint 9 wallpaper as mint-backgrounds-isadora, and choose the Mint 9 theme in Appearance, in Mint 10/11.

What are the prospects of being able to use Compiz in Mint 12?

Some of those Compiz plugins are really integral to my workflow. Whenever I'm at some computer other than my own, I find myself trying to engage certain Compiz plugins all the time. Especially two: Expo with right-click at edge to engage, and Scale plugin with type-to-filter-windows. With Gnome 3 it's not the lack of the old gnome-panel I miss, but Compiz. Unity has Compiz, but whole lot of other crap I don't want.

I never actually used the gnome-panel in Gnome2 (I found it buggy, ugly and inefficient to use), so I'll be fine if I can just have Compiz, some dock (AWN, Docky, Cairo, etc.) and Gnome-do as launcher.

The Activities overlay functions almost exactly like the Expo plugin. And there are scaling features for gnome-shell too, though maybe not exactly what you are looking for. gnome-shell is also familiar to docky with predictive type search and run.

In order to use compiz, you will have to run gnome3 in fallback mode, or use another DE.

Of course, if the MATE edition is a reality, than that should use the fork of gnome2.32 and be compatible with compiz.

And Ubuntu 11.10 is the distro on which Mint 12 is based.

You could always just change the theme for a darker desktop; simple enough surely?

Just make sure it's a gtk3 theme. The old gtk2 versions will not work, I think.
