Linux Mint 10 KDE Theming Proposal

Hello,

This is my theming proposal for Linux Mint 10 KDE. I will post the screenshots with the description underneath.
All items mentioned will also contain download links should they not be available in the repos.
The idea was to mimic the new Mint-X theme as much as possible, but with blue tones rather than green.

Wallpaper: I just changed the hue on kampongboy92 (one of the default wallpapers in Mint 10) and put
some motion blur on it to cover the ugliness resulting from the process. Just found out who the original author
was -- kampongboy92 -- and also that he already made a blue version, so I propose his version instead and won't
be linking to mine anymore.

Plasma theme: Slim Glow
(The author claims the theme was part of the kdeartwork package. I didn't check that though).

Style: QtCurve (Mint-X-KDE Theme made by myself)

-> Works great on both Gnome and KDE and makes for a very consistent appearance.

QtCurve was not inheriting the icon theme properly, but I fixed that. Compare this
screenshot which has Abiword (GTK) on the left and KWrite (KDE) on the right:

Image

The problem was that QtCurve cannot inherit other icons than Oxygen for the controls, menus and
buttons. The trick is to turn off QtCurve's icon inheriting in the theme (I fixed the QtCurve
theme I made, so just redownload it) and then also set the GTK theme manually in a
gtkrc. I suggest making a global gtkrc which resides in /etc/gtkrc-2.0 and then just
symlinking or copying it for every user on the system. Since I have no idea how to set
QtCurve themes globally, I just loaded the theme for the root user. That way apps
that require sudo also have the same theme (mintupdate, synaptic, ...).

Here is the gtkrc:

Code: Select all

gtk-theme-name="QtCurve"
gtk-font-name="Ubuntu 9"
gtk-icon-theme-name="Faenza-KDE"
gtk-toolbar-style=GTK_TOOLBAR_ICONS #Only icons in toolbars
Make sure it's on your system as the following files:

/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
~/.gtkrc-2.0 (of course, for every user on the system)
/root/.gtkrc-2.0

Colour scheme: Mint-X-KDE-blue (also by myself)

I've also made a green scheme (Mint-X-KDE) to mimic the original Gnome theme.

Icons: Faenza Cupertino for KDE

Fonts: Ubuntu size 9 (bold for the window titles), DejaVu Sans Mono 9 for fixed

Panel clock font: URW Gothic L Demi-Bold

Suggested Chromium theme: elementary

Consider all my work to be GPL.

Comments and especially any help are very welcome. :) Thank you!

EDIT: Might this logo actually be better? The little dots sort of bugged me. The single cog wheel is much better IMHO:

I tried to get your Mint-X-KDE Theme but I'm getting a 404 error. It looks like a pretty sweet look except for the Faenza icons. I've yet to want to jump on that particular bandwagon.

Thanks for your input! I just checked all links and all of them work for me. Maybe it was temporary? Can you try again?
What was the exact link that didn't work (there are 3 links I provide here, the others are links by other authors.)?

Regarding Faenza -- I think the theme is wonderful, but wouldn't mind going all the way and maybe creating a hybrid
icon theme just like on Mint 10 Gnome, where you have mostly Faenza and then maybe Elementary folder themes or
even the Oxygen folder themes. With Oxygen, I don't like those green arrow buttons, and a lot of the icons that actually
reside on buttons or in menus. They just look a little subpar.

It must have been a temp glitch like the forums have been giving me off and on today. I have it now. Thanks for checking it.

@BostonPeng: LOL, it turns out I actually took the last logo proposal from your blog post on Linux Mint KDE 9. :)
Just realized that when I clicked on the link. Actually, Google image search found the logo.

Sweet! I'm glad I could contribute something. lol I ended up finding it in my icons sets since I couldn't find the bugger online anywhere.

I really like the looks of most of the theme. Very nice work. Definitely prefer the darker theme myself.

One note though when you edit your post, simply put the edits in the original, no reason to have a separate post regarding edits.

Sorry, is that against forum policy? If so, I apologize. I'll keep it in mind.
Usually, I do that to bump the post when there are changes. Thanks for the
feedback.

Just to add that QT3 apps look equally good, should you have any of those lying around. LOL :)

Wow, I would love to see this as default in Mint 10 KDE. I have used the main edition since Mint 8, but I believe that I am going to switch to KDE when Julia KDE is released.
