(solved) connecting to windows xp shares (Lisa Gnome)

Postby mister_lister on Mon May 07, 2012 6:52 pm

Initially I had it working. I was able to connect to all the windows xp computers and printer (print open upload, etc).

After a while the connections were intermittent, I had to keep trying to connect over and over again and eventually "network browser" would connect and everything would work.

Now after a samba update it never connects, I never see the shares and I am unable to connect to the printer with cups. They all see me fine, I just don't see them with "network browser" and I am unable to connect.

Any hints or tips would be appreciated, I am a little more advanced than a a newbie, so I can do terminal stuff.

I have this problem also.
Never been able to get into XP shares.

smb:///

Get as far as the workgroup icon and then after about 2 min delay, get

error:
Failed to retrieve share list from server. [OK]

The specified location is not mounted [OK]

yes that is the same messages I get.

I was going to use linux mint permanently but I had to swap my hard drive back to the window. I have to have share access to all the computers in the house, I have a home based business, and this situation has forced me back to windows on my personal workstation until it is resolved.

Both of these situations sounds like a netbios name - to - ip address conversion problem. Please see if the following helps any:

HowTo: Samba Browsing Problems Checklist: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=88146&start=0

In the mean time circumvent this issue by accessing the server by ip address not name. For example:
Code: Select all
nautilus smb://192.168.0.100
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.

Nope it is not netbios, I already added that to smb.conf, made absolutely no difference.

I am just thinking that the last samba update broke it, thats when all of this started. But to be honest, even prior to the update it took several attempts to even connect to the shares. With the xp shared printer through CUPS nine times out of ten it would not connect. I learned a trick to access the machine as just a file share first, it created a link and I was then able to print to that xp machines printer.

Share access is basically a core feature of modern computing.

This issue drove me back to windows, so the issue is solved. Linux is a hobby OS when it comes to the consumer versions. Thanks for all your help in making the return trip.
