Running / Installing from PXE... No network connection!

I've had a PXE server set up for some time now, and used it to run / install Ubuntu (10.04 LTS), GParted and DamnSmallLinux amongst other things. I thought I'd try adding Linux Mint 12 32-bit to it, and basically followed the procedure for Ubuntu again, as documented here: http://www.howtogeek.com/61263/how-to-n ... tu-livecd/

Mint boots just fine over PXE in live mode, but I can't access the internet, and if I go to Other -> Network Connections, no connections at all are listed. Attempting to add and configure a connection in Network Manager has no effect. It does save the settings but they don't seem to be applied to the network interface, nor does it ask me for a password. The icon for Network Manager does not appear on the panel unless I run "sudo service network-manager restart". If I install Mint to the hard drive from this situation, the symptoms persist when booted from hard drive. Note that in a root terminal, when running live, typing ifconfig, lo and eth0 are listed but when installed to hard disk, only lo was listed.

Uninstalling Network Manager and setting up the network manually by editing /etc/network/interfaces and/or /etc/resolv.conf *does* work, but it's not going to be practical to do this every time I run it live. Note that the issue simply doesn't exist if booted from the actual Live DVD; the network works fine on that.

I also don't know if this is relevant or not, but the version of Ubuntu on the PXE server runs fine in live mode, networking and all.

Apologies if this has been covered before. I did search but found nothing describing this exact situation.
