Mint 13 shares pictures but not music [SOLVED]

Postby momist on Sat Dec 29, 2012 7:34 pm

Hi everyone,

I am struggling to understand this situation:
My Mint 13 Cinnamon system has shares on two folders in a data partition, one called pictures and the other called sound. The pictures folder hold all my photos and scans etc., and I can see these (read only) from my XP laptop. The sound folder holds my music, mainly in MP3 format, but nothing will play on the XP laptop. The files are visible, but all media players return a cryptic message saying that it cannot load the data. I suspect that this is some kind of microsoft permission problem, but can't seem to find a way round it.

BTW, the same laptop running either Peppermint or Lubuntu will see the shared folder on the Mint box and play the files fine! Now, you might say that this is not a problem, why run Windows? However, I have friends with Windows machines who I'd like to be able to hear my music files when they visit.

Just for information, why did I have to use Nautilus as sudo from the terminal to set up the shares? I could not find any way to induce sharing from nemo, it appears not to be implemented?

Thanks for any help.

Edit: Solved

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

In reverse order:
Just for information, why did I have to use Nautilus as sudo from the terminal to set up the shares? I could not find any way to induce sharing from nemo, it appears not to be implemented?

(1) You shouldn't be using "sudo nautilus" - it's "gksu nautilus" but that's a side issue.
(2) It's not clear from your description what's stopping you from sharing this folder as a regular user.

Do you own the folder you are trying to share through nemo? If you are and it won't let you then you probably aren't a member of the right group. Run the following command to see if you are a member of the sambashare group:
Code: Select all
id

If you aren't a member add yourself:
Code: Select all
sudo gpassed -a your-user-name sambashare

Then logout and login again

If you don't own the folder you are trying to share then doing it through a "gksu nautilus" is an acceptable way to accomplish the task.

As for the bigger problem we need more information so please post the output of the following commands:
Code: Select all
testparm -s

Code: Select all
net usershare info --long

I'm shutting down shortly but I will look at it tomorrow.
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.

Hi altair4,

Sorry to have bothered you with this, it is all my own mistake.

On much further investigation, I have found that some music worked and some didn't. Obviously, this was not a sharing problem at all, it's just that the tracks I chose to test on Linux and those I chose to test on Windows fell by chance into the two groups. On closer investigation, I discovered some of my music had the permission for others at read-only and some at "None". Where these different settings derived from, I don't know, but I assume it must be that the music was loaded under different systems at different times, and the default permissions settings used have changed. One of the traps of upgrading, and trying different Linux flavours I guess.

Thanks for thinking about it for me.

About the nemo thing, I just could not see any setting available in nemo for enabling shares, while the sudo nautilus would show the option. I am owner of the files, although they are only simlinked into my home folder from a different partition. I was trying to set the share in nemo from the actual folder in that partition, but as I say there was no sharing option on the menu. It's as if nemo is not set up to offer sharing. I'll have another look at that tomorrow.

Meanwhile, all now works as it should.
