Mint 14,Wireshark err,packet socket enabling in kernal?

I've installed Mint 14 and I'm trying to use Wireshark to capture packets coming through the router on the network. It is telling me that there are no interfaces on which a capture can be done. Support pages mention the packet socket must be enabled in the kernal. Hardware is Compaq Presario V2000, using the onboard ethernet ETH1 interface.
This is my first time trying to use any kind of sniffer software and still new to Linux.
Where do I look to verify that this is enabled and working or how do I enable it. Any other hints/tips for using Wireshark to view
my network traffic?
