I installed LM 16 Cinnamon and am trying to share files on my home network with Windows machanes. I opened "Personal File Sharing Preferences" to share files and get the message,This feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your system.
Can someone tell me what packages need to be installed?

Re: Personal File Sharing in LM 16 - not there!
Well, this is an interesting predicament. I was about to show you how in install the missing packages and then tell you why it won't work with Windows clients but it appears that there is a problem with Person File Sharing in general in Mint16.
Personal File Sharing comes from the package: gnome-user-share
The missing packages required to make it work to create a share are these:
Open Nemo
Right Click a folder you own
Select "Sharing Options"
Personal File Sharing comes from the package: gnome-user-share
The missing packages required to make it work to create a share are these:
But if you were to install apache2.2-bin it removes gnome-user-share entirely:apt-cache depends gnome-user-share | grep Suggests
Suggests: apache2.2-bin
Suggests: libapache2-mod-dnssd
Somebody in Gnome-landia was asleep at the switch again. Anyway if you want Windows machines to be able to access shares on your Linux machine you can do it through Nemo and bypass Personal File Sharing:apt-cache depends apache2.2-bin | grep Breaks
Breaks: gnome-user-share
Breaks: libapache2-mod-dnssd
Open Nemo
Right Click a folder you own
Select "Sharing Options"

Thanks altair4 - maybe a fix later down the line or LM 17 . . .
Re: (solved) Personal File Sharing in LM 16 - not there!
I have the same problem trying to share from a LM 16 machine to a LM 15 machine.
I can share the other way round, ie LM16 allows me to see the Public folder on LM15.
Is there a work-around for this?

If we are still talking about Personal File Sharing I don't see a workaround.Geoff_P wrote:I have the same problem trying to share from a LM 16 machine to a LM 15 machine.

But you can use Samba which surprisingly works much better in an all Linux network then it does in one containing Windows.
As I posted above:
Open Nemo
Right Click on your Public folder
Select "Sharing Options"
Select all the boxes.
When it asks you if you want it to alter permissions of that folder select: Yes
Now go to the other machine and run this command and when Nemo opens up bookmark it:
Code: Select all
nemo smb://linux-mint-host-name.local

Thankyou, sorted.
Running that terminal command on the LM15 machine fixed it.

If you install apache2.2-bin and then reinstall gnome-user-share it works.
