Linux Mint 16 - Samba browsing blank on Nemo

Postby dementhor on Thu Jan 30, 2014 6:55 pm

Hello,

I am trying to browse the network with Nemo, but I am getting a blank page on entering windows network. Samba is installed and direct connection is working (I can browse my NAS and myself by IP). Also, I am unable to see myself on browsing. smbtree has no output, same as the netbios longname one. I checked the samba browsing issues steps and I still don't get it how to make it work. Do you have any idea if this is a bug or am I missing something? Seemed to be pretty clear until now. I've been using Mint for 3 years... after 7 years of Fedora. I also made ufw rules and disabled it completely anyway, just in case. All dpkg dependencies are satisfied.

Code: Select all
$ testparm -s

Well, the output of those commands are just as they should be and the fact that you can connect by ip address means the samba client seems to be working. It certainly seems as though this is a name resolution issue. Can I assume you went through the Checklist ?

I'm assuming that 192.168.0.100 is the ip address of the Linux box? Can you access the Linux box using mDNS instead of Netbios:
Code: Select all
nemo smb://hostname.local

Change "hostname" to your actual host name of the linux box - and don't forget the ".local" part.

Come to think of it you might want to see if you can access the NAS that way as well:
Code: Select all
nemo smb://nas-hostname.local

If you can connect via a hostname.local then you could just bookmark it in Nemo so you won't have to browse to it any more.

Do you get any output from the nmap command when you use the ip address of the NAS?

Yes. The nemo smb://hostname.local command is working. I know about the bookmark part for the NAS, that is solved. The thing is I want to browse the network share because there is a lot of folder sharing changes and there are a lot of PCs there. It is hard to access all directly.

This is nmap output on NAS :
Code: Select all
Starting Nmap 6.40 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2014-01-31 23:28 EET
Nmap scan report for 192.168.0.110

Assuming these are all Windows boxes I would go through the checklist:
Samba Browsing Problems Checklist: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=88146&start=0

Then I would make sure the following package is installed:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install gvfs-backends

Then run the following command:
Code: Select all
smbtree

It should list every workgroup, and every host within each workgroup, and every share within each host. I will post errors if it finds roadblocks.

Sorry,

gvfs-backends is already the newest version.

Then I would submit a bug report.

When you do I would tell them the following:

*** You can access all your machines by ip address.
*** You can access all mDNS enabled machines by their mDNS qualified host names.
*** That the smbtree command lists all your machines and their shares and runs without errors.

Also list the version and desktop environment that you are using and the version of samba and gvfs and nemo that you are using.

You also might want to boot into the Mint install DVD - not to reinstall - just to see if you can see and access your machines from a "pure" state before any updates or user modifications.

Would you mind sharing the ## Browsing/Identification ### section of your smb.conf file?

## Browsing/Identification ###

# Change this to the workgroup/NT-domain name your Samba server will part of
workgroup = WORKGROUP

# server string is the equivalent of the NT Description field
server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu)

# Windows Internet Name Serving Support Section:
# WINS Support - Tells the NMBD component of Samba to enable its WINS Server
# wins support = no

# WINS Server - Tells the NMBD components of Samba to be a WINS Client
# Note: Samba can be either a WINS Server, or a WINS Client, but NOT both
; wins server = w.x.y.z

# This will prevent nmbd to search for NetBIOS names through DNS.
dns proxy = no

# What naming service and in what order should we use to resolve host names
# to IP addresses
name resolve order = bcast host lmhosts wins
