Creating a simple home network server

Post by rmcellig »

I have six computers on my LAN. They are all connected by Ethernet cable (No wireless). I'm beginning to lose control when it comes to backing up files on the various computers etc... I think it would be much easier to have one server where everything is saved on one device and backed up constantly to the cloud (I use Crashplan and love it!).

All of my computers run Linux except for my old 2006 iMac which runs Snow Leopard.

What are my options you would recomend based on your experience?

I'm looking for something that is:

1. Simple to maintain and implement
2. Stable

Apple is the odd one out for ntfs support, however with any server that provides cifs: Linux & Apple OSx can connect to and sync files to

Basically, unless you want to buy a preassembled media server or even install an extenal hard drive onto your routers USB or ether port and make the IP address available to the other computers (not simply adding the hard drive, it really needs a nas setup/system to function properly)
-- you can use any computer, since it will be maly NIC throughput that will be the issue, provided the compuetr you use to manage a shared or streamed file system is not just any old clunker (thinking Pentiums PCS..)
  • You use a hard drive in a computer case and share it to all the other computers (make it available), CIFS /ntfs mode)
--that essently makes you hard-drived/shared computer a server for the other machines or a workstation with a shared drive; the terminolgy is up to you it means the data-storage is available..
DIY nas , the above process..
