PPTP VPN - I'm Lost!

Post by blunderbus »

I'm new to Linux/Mint and am trying to get PPTP VPN to connect to my work (Windows Domain). I have read various posts/articles to get this working but am non-the-wiser really and would be grateful for any assistance to troubleshoot and, perhaps, to start over and do it correctly.

I installed OpenVPN but get 'connection failed'. I hope that the following output will provide some clues...

Hi. I found this on the Fedora web site and this looks like same problem you are having.

the log shows you're using EAP authentication. ms vpn's only like require-mppe, you have to refuse the other authentications:

refuse-pap
refuse-eap
refuse-chap
refuse-mschap
require-mppe

that would go in the /etc/ppp/options.pptp file.

if you're using network manager, go to the advanced settings window, and make sure only MSCHAPv2 is checked. uncheck the others (pap, chap, mschap, eap).

oops, while your in the advanced window, also enable the mppe stuff.

Although it looks like Network Manager is installed I'm not sure that it's running as I don't get the options you describe. I can edit the VPN connection via 'Networking' but no authentication options there.

I'm connecting to a Windows network via a Sonicwall firewall with remote access enabled on Windows server. Windows VPN clients can connect using AD credentials.

Hi it might be that you are trying to do it through Windows. I have just done a VPN on mine which is Linux and it works. May be you should try doing it in linux rather than windows. You could try going to your VPN provider and see if there is a installer you can download for your particular windows or linux as mine did.

Thanks Chris - I'll try this tomorrow.

Apologies for the delayed reply - I've not made any progress in checking re the firewall. I'm now going to look at installing TeamViewer instead.
