Mint 17.2 Win7 name problem

Post by lbunch »

Home network, new Win7 pc, XP, Linux boxes. New PC and Mint can see each other's icons, and ping each other via TCP, but Mint cannot open shares it sees on the Win7 box. UFW in Mint is off, which allows Win7 to access shares on Mint. McAfee OEM Firewall can be off or on in Win7, but access is either immediately denied, or a password box comes up which can't be satisfied. The share icons do show in the file manager.

Running the Samba browsing checklist, Nmap finds that port 138 which should be open does not show up on the Win7. All the ports are there on Mint.

Based on web searches, SMB.conf has: dns proxy = no, name resolve order = bcast host lmhosts wins, encrypt passwords - no (this helped), security = user.

What next?

Thanks,
