firefox hangs when i type "ftp://ftp-server.com" or "ftp://user@ftp-server.com" in the address bar. also hangs with fireftp. i disabled ufw and ports 20-22 are open on my router--though i don't see how any of those could be the problem since the linux ftp command was able to get through.

just had to specify a range of ports for vsftpd to use for passive mode connections and make sure those ports were forwarded from my router to my server.
