Domain Password
Hello,
I'm new to Mint but had the same problem while using Ubunbu on a different machine.
I have a home workgroup with a few linux machine (3 or 4), some XP (3) and 1 vista.
I can mount shared folder on mint but I cannot browse the workgroup.
I keep getting a demand for a password prior to allowing me to browse. No password seems to work.
i have even turned off all the machines except this one and still cannot browse.
I have tried a number of thing but cannot get to browsing. This does not happen on the windows machines but happens on the linux.
One funny thing the demand for a password uses the word "domain" not workgroup.
Thank you
Paul

Re: Domain Password
Make sure you put the domain name in front of the username Example pby\abercrombieande. If you use tsclient which is basically the remote desktop for linux can you connect to a remote server?
Re: Domain Password
Somewhat confused by your description.
How are you mounting it if you are not browsing?
One thing you could do is post the output of the following command from your Mint machine so we can see the error messages:
You can mount the Mint share from the same Mint box?I can mount shared folder on mint but I cannot browse the workgroup.
How are you mounting it if you are not browsing?
You are getting a password prompt at the "Windows Network" level, the machine level, or the share level?I keep getting a demand for a password prior to allowing me to browse. No password seems to work.
You can't browse to your own share? It asks for a password or there is nothing there?i have even turned off all the machines except this one and still cannot browse.
One thing you could do is post the output of the following command from your Mint machine so we can see the error messages:
Code: Select all

Re: Domain Password
Hello and thank you for your replies.
Sorry if I confuse you.
Mounting.
I have mounted shares via FSTAB and that worked on both Ubuntu and Mint. The shares are from a Lacie Network storage device. These mounts do not require a password.
Process
When I double click on "network" then "windows network" then "workgroup" I then get the demand for the domain password.
I have set up samba users and that does not work. I have tried to use windows log ins and that does not work.
Effectively my issue is around accessing the workgroup computers.
Thank you again

Re: Domain Password
To abercrombieande,
I have tried your suggestion without success.
I do not know what tsclient is but , as stated I can connect to remote servers via FSTAB.
Thank you for your reply

Please post the output of the following command:
And please post the line in fstab that you are using to access the remote share.
Question: If you are automounting the share in fstab why are you trying to mount it again thorough Nautilus?

Re: Domain Password
Parts of your smb.conf ( netlogon ) look like you've set yourself up as a Primary Domain Controller and parts of it ( winbind ) looks like you are part of a Windows Active Directory. I truly believe it really is asking for a domain password after all.
Since it's not listed explicitly you are also using "security = user" so the whole thing seems inconsistent. Your only share is [homes] but it has a path of /home which is owned by root. You have "guest ok = yes" in the global section and you have even defined your own guest account ( "guest account = smbguest" ) instead of using the default but you have no way of converting the unauthenticated remote user to a guest because you have the following parameter missing: "map to guest = Bad User". Maybe that's consistant with a Primary Domain Controller - I'm not sure.
I'm trying to apply what I know about a peer-to-peer network to your smb.conf and I can't. You really need to post this in the Server section of the forum. Unfortunately we don't have one so I'd suggest posting this in the Server section of the Ubuntu forum - just don't tell them you're using Mint.

Re: Domain Password
I am not sure if this will help you because I never setup a workgroup.
When I use linux to connect to a remote printer I use: smb://csa/ed-it-11/ed-print-11
csa = windows domain
ed-it-11 = server
ed-print-11 = printer name
When I use verify I get you must log in to access ....
username = windows usernamne
domain = windows domain (csa in this example)
password = windows password
I mentioned tsclient because it is the equivalent to remote desktop on windows. You can install it using linux software manager and see if you can connect to the vista pc. Might be a starting point.

Hello,
The funny thing is that other to add my proven lines to FSTAB the install is as was installed by Mint.
I will investigate further but at the moment cannot figure this out.

If by that you mean the smb.conf file I'm fairly certain that cannot be. If you want to see what the default smb.conf looks like you can find a copy of it here:PJC wrote:The funny thing is that other to add my proven lines to FSTAB the install is as was installed by Mint.

Re: Domain Password
Hello,
So if I take the default from that folder and replace my current operational file (and change the encrypt password line) I should remove my browse problem?
I'm happy to try that

Re: Domain Password
Your "current operation file" is in fact not operational because you cannot browse the network.
The big question is did you set up that smb.conf because you wanted it to be part of domain and it's not working as planned? If that's the case I for one can't help you because I have no experience at that level.
If instead this is just a simple home network then the default smb.conf that Mint ships with is better suited to your needs.
Will it solve your browsing problems. I have no idea. Most browsing problems are not Samba issues they are networking issues. Samba can sometimes be used to work around these problems but the real issue is the network.

Re: Domain Password
Hello,
No As far as I can remember all I did a clean install on a machine that had Ubuntu and XP. I then add the line to mount the network shares.
All I want is a simple home network. I had this problem before I replaced the Ubuntu and it was there after. I shall replace the current file with the standard one and see how it goes.
Where in the system would there be a default file?
Thank you
