Slow network transfers

After a saga of getting windows and linux to communicate together, I'm now able to use my old computer a file server. I have an issue, though. File transfers re dog slow. Right now I'm transferring a file that's going at 138kb/sec over wireless. I have a Netgear wireless N router, and all of my computers are networked using wireless G. I've even tried hardwiring two computers and get the same speeds. It's pretty ridiculous. Is there anything I can do to speed up the transfers?

When you click on the network manager icon and choose connection infromation, what network speed do you see?
