Getting VPNC working with Mint 12

Postby spinjsheet on Thu Feb 16, 2012 10:48 pm

I just moved from Ubuntu 11.04 to Mint 12. On Ubuntu I was able to log in to my companies VPN with VPNC but I am not seeing how to do this with Mint. In Ubuntu I was able to click on the network connection icon in the upper right hand corner and choose VPN and then choose the VPN that I had configured. I do not see that option in Mint. The only thing that I see is a list of all wireless connections, no VPN option. What am I missing?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

OK, you install network-manager-vpnc, and then you have to go to Network Manager and click the plus button. Then you can select "VPN", and you get a dialog to configure the connection. But there is no way to import a pcf file. There are at least three passwords, and three sets of nomenclatures. If you have a pcf file, the nomenclature in the pcf file will be different than the nomenclature in the network manager, and the nomenclature in the vpnc configuration files is different from both.

I found this
http://baheyeldin.com/cisco/converting- ... ormat.html

which worked well enough to produce a vpnc configuration file. I still have to enter two passwords which apparently can't be stored anywhere.

And I can't get network manager-based vpn configurations to work at all.

On Ubuntu it just worked. I imported my pcf file and after that I was able to launch vpn from the network applet without any passwords or anything. So there must be a way to make it work smoothly.

I'm able to import a .pcf and save passwords under GNOME or GNOME Classic, but passwords won't save under MATE, although I am able to import a .pcf.

So, from here, it looks like import .pcf works but saved passwords is a MATE problem, at least on my system. After getting it to work under GNOME, I thought it might work when I switched back to MATE, but it didn't.

btw, I tried using kvpnc and that was a mess. It worked once, requiring root and and kwallet passwords, but other passwords were saved. There are ways to eliminate root and kwallet password prompts, but couldn't make it work a second time no matter what I did.

Mint 12 64-bit
Kernel 2.0.0-12-generic
Gnome 3.2.1
MATE 1.2.0
network-manager 0.9.1.90-0ubuntu5.1
network-manager-gnome 0.9.1.90-0ubuntu6
network-manager-vpnc 0.9.0-0ubuntu1

Hi inigra

I have a very similar problem. I am trying to use KVPNC to connect to a CISCO VPN abroad. I am in the lucky situation that I have a second hard drive with Ubuntu. Here it is working, only in Mint the best I can achieve is a connection running.

Problem: After strating KVPNC my browser shows DNS errors, no website loaded. Sometimes KVPN crashes. There is no log scrolling through - only a grey window, no text.

I can not import settings which I exported from KVPNC in Ubuntu.

Maybe somebody can help us. I am in C|-|ina where live without VPN sucks....
