linux Mint as router...

Postby zeh on Sat Mar 10, 2012 7:03 pm

Hi
I'm using Linux Mint on my server as a router with Firestarter as the UI to handle stuff more easily, everything is working perfect except i cant "open" ports to the server it self. Atm it can only open ports to other machines on the network but i have trouble to access the server from my external network. I can connect to my Teamspeak 3 server from every ip range on my internal network, but when i try from an external source it declines it.
I tried to put a 3rd network card in the server to "trick" it to think its a new device and so'on i could open ports but that didn't work. So now i'm stuck, wonder if anyone knows how to fix this or had similar problem before? Kinda irritating to have a powerful server that only can handle network, was hoping to have everything running from one machine.

is there some sort of incoming network adress translation set up? The external packets have to be directed to the correct internal node.

What kind of internet do you have? At home I make those setting changes on my wireless router, at work I have to call the ISP to get them to configure static public IP's that are directed to internal private IP's.

Thats my guess

Yes the server is running NAT and the network is running perfect, but the problem is that the server itself doesnt allow any type of connections that are going directly to the server.
Atm its only allowing "pass-through" connection through the NAT and not the server itself, i can add ip adresses that can connect but then the whole purpose is gone

Hey,

you have to configure port forwarding on your NAT device (in common your home multifunctional router device).
You have to gon on the web frontend and configure the apropiated ports to get forwarded to the internal private IP of your Server.

I dont use a router for NAT, im using the server for that.

INTERNET--->SERVER(NAT/DHCP)--->SWITH--->WLAN
Thats how i have connected my home-network atm, the problem is the server itself that is struggeling to open port/allowing connections to itself.

Firestarter is a firewall/router application. You will need to look in it's settings for port forwarding options to allow the external access you need.
The instructions suggested Microsoft Vista or better, so I installed Linux.

Not sure if it's a dumb question or not, but why use a program that hasn't gotten an update in 7 years? Isn't there a risk that you might get a leak in the firewall because of Firestarter being very outdated?

You have to use it if you can't handle the shell :)
But you're right it's not the best option to use such a outdated software but there are often other reasons in using a software for the individual than you can recognize.

I already knew that ;) , even though I can handle the shell a bit, creating a firewall from scratch.... well lets just say it's better if a program does that for me :P
Are there any other/similar alternatives for Firestarter that you know of that aren't outdated?
