Win7 x86 - mint4win (mint7) - no bootloader entry

Grabbed the newly released Mint 7 and went to install it via mint4win on my Windows 7 RC laptop. The download and install went fine, but upon reboot it just booted right into Win7. No bootloader at all.

I installed EasyBCD and it confirmed that mint4win didn't even create an entry for Mint in the bootloader.

Now I remember this being an issue awhile back and you had to disable UAC and run mint4win as an Administrator to get it to work, but I did all that (had UAC disabled anyway) and still no go.

I remember somebody using EasyBCD to manually enter the Mint bootloader entry.

Help?

I fought this for hours... just fixed it.


if you have wubi installed or anything like that uninstall it.

use easybcd to remove all entries but the windows 7 entry

insert your mint7 x86 cd or mount an iso image to a virtual drive.

right click on mint4win.exe and go to properties

select "Vista SP1" compatibility

check "run as administrator"

run min4win.exe

set up username/pw

hit install

once install finishes load up easybcd and you should see the entry!

at this point reboot and select the new entry

install will kick off, let it finish

reboot

select the entry for mint

you are good to go

Excellent post. I had the same problem with Windows 7 RC1 and tried Mint v6 32 bit, v6 64 bit, Mint v7 32 bit and v7 64 bit and they all failed to show a boot entry. Can I stress how important it is to select the Vista SP1 compatibiltiy (Properties/Compatibility/Drop down menu). I didn't and it I failed to install again.
