To be quite honest, I would not like ANY Linux distro pre-installed on a laptop!!!

I do not want Windows either!

I would like for hardware manufacturers to disassociate themselves with software altogether!

When I buy a computer I want to pay for the hardware. Period, all stop! I will worry about what works with Linux and what does not, just give me a CLEAR description of ALL the components in your laptop, including the manufacturer and product number of the components. Everything. Webcam, wireless, broadcom, video...

With that information I can make an informed decision of what parts I want in my laptop. Then I would not need to worry about the manufacturer tailoring any Linux distro to work with the hardware.

And Windows has nothing to do with anything. If I want Windows I will buy a boxed disc from Microsoft. One without all the manufacturer BS that they add. The stuff that causes Windows NOT to work! After going through this on 3 HP laptops I now know that the problems most people have with Windows comes from this. I replaced the Vista Home Premium HP edition on two laptops with Vista Ultimate direct from Microsoft packaging and had no more problems. Windows 7 Ultimate from Microsoft packaging is likewise solid and enjoyable.

There would no longer be any of the problems we have now with Microsoft strong-arming computer and parts vendors. There would be no more questions of a monopoly. Things would be infinitely better. No one would have an advantage. And people would be forced into learning at least a little more about their computers, at least enough to get through an install. In the end this would save them money because they would not fear a reinstall as much and would be able to at least do this themselves.

Everyone wins!

So say "no" to preinstalled Linux! :D

For the most part I agree. I came across the reference to The Linux Laptop Company while searching for bare laptops or laptops which came with Linux pre-installed instead of windows. From what I learned this company provides laptops, Dell systems, with either Mint or Ubuntu installed.

Other companies gave options of bare, MS, or Linux on various hardware. The cost for Linux pre-installed varied depending on support (RHEL, Suse), but was less than MS. One manufacturer charged about $12 for Ubuntu installed than they did for the same hardware with no OS. They provided limited support w/ Ubuntu and no support with a bare system.

HOWEVER, having built a few desktop systems using boxed Windows--

I find myself disagreeing   with:

Of course the systems I had problems with  were ones I built for family members with teen and pre-teen children who had unsupervised access to install purchased software and software off disks from friends.  Nor was there internet browsing supervised.
