Control Center Resolution Update - NVIDIA Driver

Postby DataMan on Wed Apr 14, 2010 4:25 am

As discussed in the Hardware forum, unable to update the screen resolution via the Control Center (NVIDIA Settings). When accessed, the screen resolution can be set to whatever is supported with the NVIDIA driver. The resolution will hold for the current session only. The difficulty arises when a "save" is attempted for permanent setting retention. Error message on parsing the xorg.conf file.

Environmentals:

Mint 8 64 bit - Gnome
Video Card : GeForce 9800Gt
NVIDIA Driver : 185.18.36

Work Around:
Copy the new configuration settings directly into the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file

Possible Root Cause:
Suspect that the dialog in the NVIDIA is not linked to the super user level needed to update the xorg.conf file.

It didn't work even if you open NVIDIA X Server Settings as root?
Code: Select all
gksudo nvidia-settings

Thanks Proxima.

The bash command does resolve the issue. The ability to do this from the Control Center does not work because (I believe) the user is not at super user level, thus my bug report.

Your absolutely right though, you should have the required privileges to make full use of the settings manager.

I'm sure you're aware you can change the command in the menu entry, prefixing it with "gksudo" - but yes, this isn't something the user should have to do in the first place.
