Has anyone installed MATE on Mint 12 LXDE?

Postby BrunoMiranda on Mon May 21, 2012 4:57 pm

Hello everyone,

Out of curiosity, i have tried to install MATE on Mint 12 LXDE, and failed :P

Has anyone managed to do this?

I follow the instructions from http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/download#ubuntu , but when i try to install the mate-core package, i get this error and i'm never able to fix the broken dependences (even through Synaptic):

apt-get install mate-core
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

Has anyone managed to install MATE? Am i doing something wrong, missing anything, or there is just some general system-wide incompatibility?

Thanks and best wishes,
Bruno

Hi
I think the command your looking for is
Code: Select all
sudo mint-meta-mate

That should pull all the dependencies you need.

Hello kc1di, and thanks for your reply!
Well, that also didn't work... Let's go step-by-step to check what might be going wrong.

Here's what i did (as root):

Added the repo:
add-apt-repository "deb http://packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/ubuntu precise main"

and then

apt-get update
W: GPG error: http://packages.mate-desktop.org precise InRelease: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 68980A0EA10B4DE8

apt-get install mate-archive-keyring

apt-get update
(no errors)

Ok Sorry it did not work.

Let's clean things up a bit and try again

in terminal do the following:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get update

let me know if you still get the list of packages that are broken.

Nop... Same thing. :(

Both the autoclean and the dpkg commands have produced no errors.

Don't know if this helps, but this is the list of the source repos:

cat sources.list
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ lisa main upstream import
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ lisa-lxde main upstream import
deb http://packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/ubuntu precise main
deb-src http://packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/ubuntu precise main

I'm absolutelly cluess...

To get the volume control, mate-media, I added deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ maya main upstream import . It worked perfectly.

Thanks for the hint, but this also didn't do any good... Still the same errors.

I've also tried to install mate-media but it gave other packages errors, but of the same kind.

I've installed and uninstalled a few packages on this system, replaced pulse audio with alsa (for performance on this slow computer) but i don't think it is related with this issue...

Well, folks, i've given it up and installed Mint 13, the Mate version, and also installed Lxde on it.
I like the Mate touch and feel and also Lxde's speed, because i'm on a 900MHz Celeron laptop. Now i can choose both desktop environments :)

But thank you all for your help!

Bruno, i know this comes late but just for the record:
- you had there 2 problems:
problem 1: somehow you eliminated the ubuntu part from the sources.list, can't be, you need them, you add the mate repo but have to keep the oneiric entries.
problem 2: you missed this (from the mate wiki)

If you want to try the latest MATE packages, you can use the MATE repository for Ubuntu. Once set up the repository, you need to edit the /etc/apt/preferences file as follow:

Code: Select all
Package: *
Pin: release o=linuxmint
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: origin packages.linuxmint.com
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: release o=Ubuntu
Pin-Priority: 500

Package: *
Pin: origin packages.mate-desktop.org
Pin-Priority: 700

with those 2 details it would have worked

Zerozero,
Your answer didn't come late, it has come just in time! Thank you!

I've followed your instructions, you were right. My mistake was not knowing which version of Ubuntu Mint12 was based on. I've been tweaking and learning a lot these days... Following instructions in Linux isn't always that straight forward...

The next problem i had was making MATE start by default, but this has solved it, by installing and configuring lightdm:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=199&t=100570&p=586840#p586840

I've also uninstalled gdm and lxdm, and i've ended up booting to a console, but i managed to boot into LXDE by typing startx. Then i have followed the above procedure in the link and it is running fast enough!
Now my Intel Classmate Celeron 900MHz has a life again and keeps on embarrassing people with fast computers cluttered with Windows plus lots of garbage!

Well, at least for one year, while Mint 12 LXDE is supported...

Bye for now,

Pretty sure only one(1) DM will be the default

If you add a DM (say MDM) with synaptic in the detail you'll be asked what DM you want as default  I believe LXDE and mate (can set default in 'Login window' settings of MDM) will show as a session in MDM, but mate doesn't in LXDM :?:
