LM LXDE Loads Black Screen with Mouse after Login

if i reboot enough times eventually i'll get desktop icons and a menu, maybe 1 out of 10 times. how do i begin determining the cause of this?

i'm using 32bit Linux Mint 12 LXDE edition on an older P4.
