Is there a way to speed up LM LXDE?

I'm using LM 10 LXDE on an older P4 laptop with a max ram of 512 MBs. It tends to run rather jerkily. It says there are no updated video drivers to be downloaded. Are there any tricks like disabling processes or what not to get this thing to run better? Thanks.

Mint 10 LXDE is no longer supported (based on Ubuntu 10.10): https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

It still downloads and installs updates.
