To make it more compatible with 'exotic' (or just old) hardware. Last time I looked it used the following boot 'cheat' codes - xforcevesa, nomodeset, b43-blacklist=yes, noapic, noacpi, nosplash, irqpoll.
They are easy enough to google if you want to find out about them.
