Moving On

Postby bobcollard on Wed Nov 04, 2009 11:03 pm

Hi, Well as you can see from my signature I'm moving on. I wish to remain part of this forum, if nothing else, to keep up with the rest of the world. You were here for me when I needed you. It took me awhile to find what I have, searching through different forums. My new system is more specific for my kind of computer. it is made with my hardware and drivers in mind. Originally, when I first started using Linux, Dell had an older version of Ubuntu and I was not interested. Now they have caught up with the times and this newer version is up to date with very good wireless networking. Anyone with a Dell, interested, the following link will get you started:

I am sure many of us run several distros at the same time on his or her computers. For example, I run Mint 7 Gloria, Debian 5 Lenny, and Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. Between the girls, toys, and animals, I keep busy. I never really moved on - I just added more to my dance card. I am just not the monogamous type, I suppose. Ha, ha, ha...

As you may guess I have tried many distros. One at a time. I always hoped I could find one thing to stay with it. I had it with kubuntu 9.04 then lost my wireless. My first computer I had for seven years with two five and a quarter floppy dirves, it worked, did what i needed at the time. I built it, hacked the registry on three different versions of MSDOS to keep it running. At the time 768k of RAM was more than enough to run two programs and have room for a RAM drive. Times change, we've come a long way since MSDOS 2.7. If it works don't fix it.

I haven't had Mint on my computer for quite some time now.

openSUSE is my distro of choice.

I still visit this forum daily though and I enjoy it.

I should add that I still recommend Mint to Linux newcomers.

I couldn't agree more with this statement. I have learned a great deal about Linux by using Mint. Everything seems to work, or one can get it to work, without knowing java or python or C. Because I've had such a positive experience I have become much braver in trying more difficult tasks and at trying more "expert friendly" linux variants. If I hadn't had these positive experiences I would probably still be just another windows user.

I even installed Gloria on my parents' machine because their primary problem was viruses and malware and crap like that. So far so good!

Thanks to all the people that make Mint

bobcollard - Just remember the address, cause you may want to come back. Any version of Mint is always a "cleaned up" Ubuntu. So, when a download breaks your Ubuntu, remember the MintUpdate that prevents breaks if setup correctly.

bobcollard, it's nice to hear you are going to remain part of the community despite changing back to Ubuntu. I can certainly understand wanting to use a the Dell version of Ubuntu on your Dell machine. Might I suggest installing the Mint tools though, and that way you can have the best of both worlds.

Mint Tools? Do I need to use a Mint Linux backports to install those? Sounds interesting. BTW when is Linux Mint (8) Helena supposed to come out? I was thinking of running it side by side with what I've got. Then I would really have the best of both worlds.

Bob, here are the Mint repos for Gloria. You can add them to your sources.list file with the following command. Enter the information and save the file.
Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Now refresh Apt. You can now browse synaptic for any of the Mint tools that you want to install.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
