how to : Multilingual Mint version

Hello.
This is my first time using Linux Mint , I used Ubuntu some times ago so i consider myself totally new to linux but so far im loving this MInt version .
current installation of Linux mint is English , I also need to add Japanese support so I can not only see Japanese characters but also be able to Type in Japanese , I was wondering if any one can guide me step by step ? I really don't want to break this installation .

I did change keyboard layout .. however, when i change layout to Japanese , it still types in English . i need to type in Japanese as well . any suggestion ? japanese language is just for using hotmail to send and receive emails in Japanese
