<SOLVED> How to uninstall ironhide and stop using nvidia

Postby thedoctar on Wed Apr 25, 2012 4:11 am

My laptop has an nVidia card with nVidia Optimus, so I tried to get it working by installing ironhide and all the nVidia drivers (this was some time ago), but it didn't really work, so I just turned off the nVidia card in the BIOS. I've uninstalled all the nVidia packages, but I can't uninstall ironhide. When I sudo apt-get remove ironhide this is the output:
Code: Select all
Removing ironhide ...
Enabling nVidia Card failed (Error: AE_NOT_FOUND).
FATAL: Module nvidia_current not found.
groupdel: group 'ironhide' does not exist
dpkg: error processing ironhide (--remove):
subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 6
Processing triggers for ureadahead ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 ironhide
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I'm not sure what the error code means on the last line, but when I look at dpkg.log
Code: Select all
user@laptop /var/log $ cat dpkg.log | grep ironhide

I'm not sure what it means by half-installed. But is there anyway to remove ironhide?

Also, I've uninstalled all the nVidia packages, by going to synaptic and filtering all installed packages which had nvidia in their name and purging them, but on Xorg.8.log, it says all this stuff about nvidia.

Code: Select all
user@laptop /var/log $ cat Xorg.8.log | grep nvidia
[   977.283] (++) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.nvidia"
[   977.284] (++) ModulePath set to "/usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg,/usr/lib/xorg/modules"

[   977.298] (II) Loading /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/nvidia_drv.so
[   977.298] (II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
[   977.300] (II) Loading /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/nvidia_drv.so

However, I've already purged the package nvidia-current. The output also says it uses xorg.conf.nvidia, which contains

But xorg.conf, which is the normal configuration file for xorg only contains this,
Code: Select all
Section "Device"
   Identifier   "Default Device"
   Option   "NoLogo"   "True"
EndSection

So is there any way to make Xorg stop using the nVidia config file and use the normal config file, and is the normal config file really supposed to be that short?

You can delete xorg.conf completely. Ironhide does not need to be uninstalled, when you don't use optirun you also won't use your nvidia.

When you don't have ironhide/bumblebee installed at all, both cards will be powered on. I recommend to keep it installed but not use it, then nvidia is powered down and intel is probably working. You can safely remove the nvidia driver (if any).

But I've disabled the nvidia card in the BIOS, so there's no use for me to keep ironhide. Also, now that I've uninstalled nvidia-current, apt won't work now because it keeps trying to remove ironhide, but exiting with an error, because ironhide depends on nvidia-current.

Also, why does the Xorg log try to use some nvidia module, and in the xorg.conf.nvidia file, under Section "Device", it says Driver "nvidia". Does this mean it uses nvidia drivers?

You can just remove the xorg.conf file of the nvidia driver.

Please install the driver again, then purge ironhide, and then purge the driver. You can also try apt install -f to fix broken packages.

Hey, I removed ironhide with these instructions here that I found: http://askubuntu.com/questions/76070/i- ... r-packages and removed xorg.conf.nvidia.

Thanks for your help.
