how do you edit menu.lst ?

Hi, I was just wondering how I can edit and successfully save a change in
grub menu.lst. I went in and uncommented the Windows line to try to get my
Windows partition (winxp, ntfs) to show up in grub. But It wouldn't let me save the change because " menu.lst is a read only file", and "you are not the owner, so you aren't authorized to make this change anyway"...

Ok, I found gedit to make the changes to the menu.lst file. didn't make any
difference though, Still don't have windows xp on my grub list ??

Solved! had to play with the menu.lst for a while, after I uncommented
all of the items in the windows xp area, and deleting hidden menu, now I can
boot into Mint or xp
