Linux Mint(Katya) keeps crashing and takes me to log-in menu

I've been having this issue for the longest time now, but it just seems as though it's getting worse. Every so often right in the middle of a session, my screen goes black with some sort of error output that displays only for a fraction of a second before disappearing and taking me back to the log-in screen. I'm pretty sure there must be a log report that can flesh out the specifics in terms of what causes these crashes, so I was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction so I can post the results here. I did look in /var/logs/ and I tried opening various logs such as "faillog" but they won't open and I don't know which one has the relevant information. It's worth noting that usually the crashes occur when I'm in my browser (Chrome) or when I have multiple applications open.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had the same problem system crashing at apparently random times. My wife has a similar problem - screen freezes with jumbled images. Calibre caused particular problems. I use Calibre to turn html files into ebook format which involves importing the html, converting it to an ebook format and then deleting the imported html. At some point in this process I could guarantee a crash.

In the end I have upgraded to Mint 13 and so far so good but its early days. Once I am convinced Mint 13 is stable, I will upgrade my wife's computer. She puts fewer demands on the resources so should have fewer problems (says he hopefully)
