sudo shred command

hi all
am just curious when looking up sudo shred commands such as sudo shred /dev/sda -n 7 etc i am curious what just putting sudo shred /dev would do as it would shred the entire device directory i am assuming .. is there a chance it can render things such as webcams and internal devices inoperable? as i feel using the command in this fashion could quickly erase all data on multiple removable media formats along with c:

any information on the pro's and cons of this question is much appreciated

It's a Destructive command what will wipe out your /dev/sda partition.

sudo is required because it's the /dev/ directory.

i get that much i am just wondering what the result will be if i just used /dev instead of /dev/sda as the /dev refers to devices while /dev/sda points to a specific device would /dev shred the entire device list and if so is there a chance to damage devices making them inoperable
