Storage Hard Drive

Post by nocreativity »

Hi guys!

I've on my main drive a dual boot setup, with windows 7 and mint 13. I just bought a new hard drive, to use only for storage, and I plan to be able to access it from both OS.

I was going to format it to NTFS, but I read somewhere that this is not a good idea for a storage only HD (I've no idea where thus I don't know if it was a reliable source). I know windows cant read ext4, and that FAT32 is off the table (because of the file size limit). So my question is, should I format it in NTFS anyway?

I know this isn't a direct linux related question, but this is the one technology forum I'm currently reading, so I figured I would ask here.

I dual boot Windows and Mint from two different hard drives and use NTFS for storage. Never had a problem.

If you want to make it easier to use the windows OS computer connection yes, the format should be NTFS
-Linux will support that via Samba

  • Could also depend on the fil(s) you are using, for example *.mp3 or *.doc or *.odt (OpenOffice/LibreOffice) are pretty much cross-platform already
--but you still need to be able to read the hard drive's file format to transfer/read/edit the file(s)
