last command not showing anything

i ran the last command to see the last time i logged in and all it says is
wtmp begins Sat Sep 1 07:35:04 2012

why is the last command not showing user and terminal last logged in?

i ran it as sudo.

Does your /var/log/wtmp file exist, and does it have content?
