Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

iptables is the program you use to configure the netfilter rules. So read "man iptables" to get the details on this program. Or you can browse some documentation on their website: http://www.netfilter.org/documentation/index.html

Unless you know what you are doing, using ufw is the better idea. ufw is a more user friendly way to configure iptables, and is installed on Linux Mint also.
