put a sortcut to desktop

i'd like to put shortcuts on desktop (firefox for example). How can I do it?

ok, I found but i can't create shorcut, i have no rights. Should I use terminal and sudo to create shortcut?

I found myself:
Custom Application Launcher - command line firefox, name firefox, icon firefox.

Shouldn't be that hard. Click applications then internet highlight the Firefox Icon and right click. The option is there to place it on the desktop.
