All installs/changes lost upon reboot

I'm dualbooting Mint 13 and Windows 8. Inaugural boot into Mint, I go into user accounts and create an account for myself (since Mint just went right to desktop), run update manager, install a few programs, change a few things around (wallpaper, etc).

Reboot, and when I log back into Mint, everything's gone. No user account, no programs--even the updates are all evidently gone (according to update manager). I'm at a complete loss on what might cause this. i've played around with Mint before (by no means more than a novice, so "play" seems appropriate), and while I've always encountered bugs, never anything quite like this. The only difference between now and then is Windows 8 vs. Windows 7.

Some Googling bore no fruit, so anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Text in boldface is telling me you ran Mint as a live environment from the DVD or UFD. Live environments = changes/customizations get lost when you reboot. Install it first on your computer.

Ah, absolutely correct (and terribly embarrassing!). Uncertain how I could have finaigled that, but all cleared up now--thanks very much!
