Hardware recomendations for Mint.

Hi all, I'm using Bianca in my "hobby" machine at the moment. A PIII-1400 with 768mg RAM and an Nvidia FX-5500 / 128mg VGA card.

I'd like to move it into a more powerful machine and was thinking along the lines of a P4 3.0 (socket 478 Northwood core)

I read that Linux generally is happier with Nvidia VGA cards but what about motherbozrd chipsets? Sis, VIA or Intel, or does it not matter?

Does Mint take advantage of dual channel memory in say an Intel 865 based motherboard?

All advice appreciated.

if it can help I have also a p4 3ghz (northwood) on asus p4p800 deluxe (intel 865 chipset) 2x512MB ram Corsair in dual channel and an ati 9700 aiw

Linux mint and all other distro that I have tried (debian, ubuntu, simplyMepis, backtrack, symphonyos, openSuse, fedora) works well

the dual channel I think it is managed by bios

Thanks for your replies, I think I'll go with a P4 3.0 on an Intel 865 based board, a gig or ram and something like a 6600 VGA card.

P.S. Believe it or not it runs good on the P3 1.4 with an Intel chipset.

Here's what it ended up on:

P4 / 3.0 (Northwood 12cap)
ASrock Intel 865 based MB
1gig DDR500 ram
Nvidia 6800

Machine clocked at 3.6ghz and boy does Bianca fly.

Sorry, that's a 30 cap CPU and RAM clocked at 480mhz.
