VMware Tools problem with Mint Mate

I installed Mint Mate in VMware Player on a Windows 7 host system. I also installed the VMware tools successfully - however, they do not work - e.g. shared clipboard between host and guest.

This is not my first VMware installation. Ubuntu, Zorin and Windows 8 are also installed and the tools work perfectly. With Mint Cinnamon I had the same problems as with Mate.

I am pretty certain that the tools were installed correctly and they are also in the startups. What could be this special problem in Mint.

I now read that the clipboard works differently in Mint than in other distros. Does anybody know anything about that and how to make it behave like e.g. in Ubuntu.
