Video is lagging

Hi all,

I notice that, when i play a video or movie under Vlc, that it lags. After each 3-4 seconds the video-screen shows a lag. I can see the screen 'jump", it is very short, tenths of seconds. Why is that? Is it Vlc or a driver issue? I noticed this after a system update.

hi, nomko. I've had problems with VLC since my first ever install of Linux, Mint 13 Cinnamon, just last year. Playing any video with VLC would override my system settings and cause the monitor to turrn off, screen blanking, 10 minutes, 10 seconds, or random. VLC would not play a playlist in order, it was always random. Since I upgraded to Mint 14 KDE and the upgrade to KDE 4.10, VLC no longer has these problems. It works correctly. I think it is VLC and how it interacts with other Linux files. Beyond that statement is beyond my knowledge level.

I'll try another videoplayer. Maybe that makes a different.
But as i said, i noticed this after the last system update. And i can't tell which package it responsible for it.

Okay, i really go nuts here with Vlc. Did a search on the internet and it seems to be a real Vlc issue here:

Also what i found (this couldn't be of nu use..... but then again....):

On my Ubuntu machine this is what i did for totem.
I went to usr/share/applications and clicked on multimedia selector,From there you click video and than change then
change the setting to x11 or something to that nature.

It's not necessarily a VLC issue. Usually it's caused by the video card refreshing faster than the display can respond, which is particularly a problem for TFT/LCD displays running at 60Hz, amd explains why you see it happening in VLC.

The best you can do is to set VBLANK sync on in whatever video driver you use. You might also set VLC to use GPU accelerated decoding, with post-processing priority set to 6, and accelerated video output turned on as well.

NO...i'm not your mate. Got it?

As far as linux is concerned its only really good for typing / light internet browsing. Thats why it is free.... When it comes to the finer things in life such as video, games ect ect ect you need windows or a mac. Linux is a good pet project lol.

VBLANK or VSync is a video driver setting.

The other thing you could do is install a low-latency kernel and see if that makes a difference:

You should verify that in Synaptic, and probably install it from there too. I'm not using Mint at the moment so I can't check it for you.
