If I use Suse 10.2 or Fedora 6, I can execute 3d programs. With Linux Mint or Ubuntu, I can not. Any suggestions?

Maybe that question was not worded very well. How about this?
If I'm in Linuxmint and my resolution is 1280x1024 3d is working. In 1024x768 it is not, why? I thought the lower the resolution the more favorable it would be to have 3d. No? In SUSE 10.2 it works with either.
