[SOLVED] Mint 16 shut down hangs

Postby tiato on Sat Dec 28, 2013 9:27 am

Hi there,

i got the same problem as in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=142184

On shut down, regardless if per Menu > Quit > Shut down or commandline shutdown -h now, the system hangs up with a black screen and the fan starting to turn up. I applied the suggested solution of the above thread, but it did not work
change the string GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="reboot=bios" in /etc/default/grub and sudo update-grub

However, now i can see, where the shutdown process hangs. Its last lines are:
Code: Select all
* Stopping crypto disk... [ok]
mount: / is busy
* Will halt now
[ 55.45643] mei_me 0000:00:16.0: stop
[ 55.46764] reboot: Power down

The sys.log still shows the same error, as it seems the cinnamon-session hangs:
Code: Select all
NetworkManager[844]: <info> (wlan0): IP6 addrconf timed out or failed.
NetworkManager[844]: <info> Activation (wlan0) Stage 4 of 5 (IPv6 Configure Timeout) scheduled...

colord: device removed: xrandr-eDP1
colord: Profile removed: icc-1a9f899c3e4e1b676693437da97d98d8
cinnamon-session[1642]: WARNING: Failed to get protocol version from MDM
cinnamon-session[1642]: CRITICAL: csm_manager_set_phase: assertion 'CSM_IS_MANAGER (manager)' failed
cinnamon-session[1642]: Gtk-CRITICAL: gtk_main_quit: assertion 'main_loops != NULL' failed

I also tried with no effect:
- using bootoption apci=off
- using other distros (sabayon GNOME, Fedora, Tiny Core Linux)

Any help is appreciated!

Hi!
While I (unfortunately) cannot provide any solution (as I have only begun using Linux a few days ago) i am also quite interested in a solution to the problem. I also tried the thing you mentioned, to no avail. My system seems to shut down completely (the harddrive is audibly off) but then is stuck with the LinuxMint symbol displayed on the screen. Only solution is a hard shutdown. Not quite keen on doing that everytime. Same problem occurs when trying to hibernate. :?

I am suspecting a graphics driver issue. I have Nvidia driver 319 activated which is recommended by Mint. Which driver is active for you ?

My restarts/shutdowns occassionally hangs at the end the same way. Only a hard shutdown will work. Running on 64 bit machine, LM 16 Mate (32 bit) on kernel 3.11.0.12.

Only other reason can be a kernel problem, solution may be to switch to a new kernel.

I had this problem. Go to web site Upubuntu and upgrade kernel to 3.11.6 for Mint15 and Mint16.

It wasn't the driver. I resolved the issue by installing a new kernel 3.12.5. Steps below. However I switched to nouveau driver because i read this kernel is not compiled with nvidia support. I didn't try activating it.

Code: Select all
cd Downloads/
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.12.5-trusty/linux-headers-3.12.5-031205-generic_3.12.5-031205.201312120254_i386.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.12.5-trusty/linux-headers-3.12.5-031205_3.12.5-031205.201312120254_all.deb
wget wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.12.5-trusty/linux-image-3.12.5-031205-generic_3.12.5-031205.201312120254_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.12.5-*.deb linux-image-3.12.5-*.deb

Reboot and check if new kernel is loaded with uname -r.

I wonder what difference that might have made. Because if I am right the newer kernels are enhancements on top of last and 3.11 is a very recent one.

Thanks all, updating the kernel did the charm. Just for the record, i basically used the script provided by UpUbuntu:
http://www.upubuntu.com/2013/12/installupgrade-to-linux-kernel-3126-in.html but reduced to the parts only needed for my amd64 architecture.

you can save the following as install-new-kernel.sh and make it executable with
Code: Select all
chmod u+x
and execute as
Code: Select all
sudo ./install-new-kernel.sh

install-new-kernel.sh :
Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh
# requires the following
# wget, uname

echo "$(tput setaf 3)--- Kernel 3.12.6 will be installed in an `uname -i` system---$(tput sgr0)"
echo ""

sleep 2

read -p "Press Enter to continue, or abort by pressing CTRL+C" nothing

echo ""
echo ""

cd ~/Downloads

DIR=kernel-amd64

mkdir -p ${DIR}

cd ${DIR}

Question:
Does anyone know if the same fix would be feasible in Olivia/15?
According to uname my kernel is:
3.8.0-25-generic
I'm having a similar problem, but I don't want to make the attempt unless I know it's a good idea to try it.
There's additional info here (viewtopic.php?f=46&t=155618) if more information is needed.

I would say it is worth trying since the overhead would be little. It is easy to install and remove. You can also switch the kernel back if it doesn't help.

Not sure if that would help in my case.

When I try it as described at

http://www.upubuntu.com/2013/12/install ... 26-in.html

I only get: "Error 404: Not Found."

My system specs are:
Operating system: Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon 32-bit (Version 2.0.14)
Linux Kernel: 3.11.0-12-generic
Processor: Genuine Intel CPU T2300 @1.66Ghz x 2
Graphics Card: Intel Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integratet Graphics Controller

For some reason I also have trouble with Skype, as the audio alternates between quite bad and some cruel noise (which continues until I quit the application, regardless if a call is made or not).

I would greatly appreciate any help!!! (Just bear in mind that I have practically no programming experience and will need all the commands for the terminal in detail. :oops: )

For the skype problem, try to workout the solution mentioned in this answer. I had this issue before and I remembering fixing it. http://askubuntu.com/a/201747/119449

The 404 error says the file you are trying to download doesn't exist there. Follow this guide to install step by step instead of running any script. Don't forget go with steps outlined for 32bit, that's your arch. http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/201 ... ntu-linux/

I tried the upgrade, but it didn't seem to help. Additionally, it nixed fuctionality on my wireless.
However, after purge:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get purge linux-image-3.12.6*

My system is back to normal. Reboot and shutdown are without error, and my USBs are also back to working.
I'm not sure why it worked, but seems to have done the trick.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the tip! Not quite SOLVED for me though!
Tried the kernel-update - no improvement, same problem.
With the skype solution I have the problem that it says to:

Search for the following line:

load-module module-hal-detect

and append "tsched=0" to the end:

load-module module-hal-detect tsched=0

Doesn't work for me as the line ...hal-detect already has something behind it (though I can't remember what I is and I am not behind my Linux Laptop at the moment...) :?

Hi everybody,

I had this problem as well. I solved this by using Nvidia driver 304. And there is no problem any more.
