Cold boot- login freeze and load average is 1+

Post by mazzyguy »

Have been running Mint Petra 16 (64bit) Cinnamon for a little while now, but on a cold boot the login password field is frozen for about 20 seconds before you can enter a password. And once logged in the load average never drops below 1 - even when idle. But if you then warm boot (shutdown -r now), you can enter the password immediately and the load average will drop to near 0 when idle. Any ideas why the cold boot is behaving like this?

Solved.
By going into Driver Manager and selecting an alternative NVIDIA display driver. After selecting 'nvidia-304-updates' (version 304.108-0ubuntu1) the problems of freezing login password field and load average never below 1 disappeared. Perhaps some conflict with the default driver and this particular display adaptor or HP Compaq BIOS... I did flash upgrade the BIOS but didnt make any difference.
