Mint 17 session has lasted less than 10 seconds

Post by AlexPegrum »

When booting linux mint after logging in it comes up with an error that says:

Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some problem with the installation or that you may be out of disk space . Try logging in with one of teh failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem

View details (~/.xsession-error file)

I have no idea how to fix this so any help is much appreciated

Is it possible that you may be out of disk space on your / partition?
Have you tried logging in with one of the failsafe sessions ?

To check on the space available for the / partition you can look at it with the Disk Manager or gparted, or mount the / partition and enter the command: df -h
Are you using Cinnamon or Mate or ?

It does not matter how much free space you have on the hard drive. What matters is how much space you have on the / partition.
If I encountered this problem, I would reinstall Mint 17 to the same partition, WITHOUT FORMATTING the partition. That would preserve the settings you have.

Hi Austin,

I have same problem as op. Df -h return only 13% in use on a 46 GB partition or 6.4 GB. I only incurred this problem after an upgrade. Don't remember specifics of what was upgraded though or when.

Couch_Potato, it would be best to start a new thread on your problem.
Adding to an old thread gets confusing.
Include the result of the command, inxi -Fxz and which version of Mint.
