  1. Google for "Ubuntu uprade kernel 3.16", because Mint 17 is based on Ubuntu 14.04
  2. Find this article at the top of the hit list returned by Google.
  3. Make a complete backup of your data files. Something which you should do on a regular basis anyway.
Make a complete backup of your system. Something which you should do on a regular basis anyway, or at least, before applying major changes to your system.
  4. Proceed according to Install/Upgrade to Linux Kernel 3.16 in Ubuntu 14.04/12.04, because Mint 17 is based on Ubuntu 14.04
  5. Keep your fingers crossed the result will be what you expected.

depending on your hw and drivers used it may improve or make it worse.
post your details before you try an upgrade.
I had to revert to 3.16.1 as 3.16.2 was making my mouse freeze and video watching very slow.

Code: Select all

sudo inxi -U

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

so you are suggesting not to upgrade my kernel?
is there any other way to upgrade kernel? for example by

Code: Select all

apt-get upgrade

it's never easy but let's have a look on your hw and drivers and please explain why you would like to upgrade it?

Go here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

choose your kernel version ( i would recommend 3.16.2 if you insist on 3.16, otherwise 3.14.18 because that's a long term version).

Download three packages:
linux-headers-....-generic
linux-headers.....all
linux-image-.......generic

keep them in a folder. Go to that folder and open a terminal there. then run code:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i *.deb
N.B: don't uninstall the current kernel. If anything goes wrong you can always return to the current kernel with sufficient safety.

Hi, I am in the same situation and searching for some tip.
I've seen the "how to" part but as I'm a newbie I don't know if it's worthing.
My problem is that I'm not satisfied with how my amd HD 7970 is working with Houdini, which uses OpenGL 3.3 and i read newest kernel's versions have better support for amd video hardware.
So the big question is: is it worthing the upgrade?

no as long as we don't see your hw and driver output, we are in wild wild west guessing mode. Why are you so reluctant giving us the right input?
and again what makes you think a kernel upgrade may fix a problem you didn't even describe so far?????

No problems when the program is launched opening a file.
This is a problem as I work with that and I fear the problem could go worst... I feel a kind of unstable situation ... But really, I don't know if it worth the upgrade.
If you need something more just ask :)
Thank you!
